UEFN Freelance Work & QA
Last year I started getting into UEFN recreationally with my prior knowledge of UE5. After GDC 2024 I found myself working on Road King Tycoon which seg-wayed into a a multitude of contracts, collaborations and investment into the creator space. As of writing this I've contributed to the development of 20+ Fortnite maps in various roles.
Skills I've gained and Improved on:
-
Game Design: Further understanding of popular genres and games to figure how they work and being able to iterate on their design.
-
Rapid Iteration: Having the advantage of prebuilt tools, UEFN maps benefit from fast iterations and turn around times similar to AAA.
-
Level Design: With the faster iteration times I've gotten to make maps for a variety of genres
-
Environment art, VFX and Lighting: I enjoy these skills a lot but with traditional game development I usually find myself with less time and agency to branch into these.
-
Collaboration: I've worked with so many people online that I'd never have a chance to meet with in person giving me new strengths in leadership and coordination with design teams.
-
Lots of QA knowledge: After playing and making so many Fortnite maps I've accumulated a lot of knowledge of the community and what players want to engage with vs what developers think players want to engage with.
